8 Famous Movie Cars

For true car enthusiasts, cars are more than just a way of getting from A to B. They are beautiful pieces of machinery worthy of admiration!

Luckily, the movie industry sees cars in this way too, with many films being remembered for their high-speed chases and the iconic cars that bring a personality all of their own to the big screen!

We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite famous movie cars that outshine their human co-stars!

Here at Colwills, we may not be able to transform your car into a movie star, but we do offer full car servicing to get your vehicle back to peak performance. Why not give us a call to book in a service today?

1968 Ford Mustang in Bullitt

This movie and car helped set the tone for future car chase scenes and muscle car films. It was one of the first movies to capture the audience’s attention and imagination when it came to high-action car-related cinema.

With scenes following the pursuit between the iconic green Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger around San Francisco, this film would prompt a string of action films featuring muscle cars throughout the 1970s.

1964 Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger

Muscle cars, like many mentioned here, tend to be an American breed but there is also a more British tradition with famous movie cars. The James Bond franchise has built a legacy around cool cars and gadgets, and it was the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that appeared in Goldfinger and Thunderball that began the Bond tradition.

This model is so well-loved by car and movie enthusiasts that one of the Astons used in the original film was recently sold for an astounding $4.6 million!

1969 Dodge Charger in Dukes of Hazzard

Although also making an appearance in Bullitt, the Dodge Charger found its fame in the original Dukes of Hazzard television series and later in the 2005 movie.

The movie’s 1969 orange Dodge Charger, known as General Lee in the Duke of Hazzard, is perhaps one of the most famous and recognisable cars to star on the big screen. Known for its wild movie stunts including drifts and jumps, this car definitely deserves a place on the list!

This particular muscle car also appears in Blade and The Fast and the Furious, among many other films.

1963 Volkswagen Beetle in Herbie: The Love Bug

When you think of famous cars from the movies, Herbie might be one of the first cars to pop into your mind.

Many cars can seem to bring personality to a film, but as a sentient car capable of independent driving, Herbie is the heart and soul of this movie! The iconic Herbie Beetle is distinguished by the white body and iconic blue and red racing stripes.

Although any Volkswagen branding was removed for the first movie, VW was happy to be identified as the car’s manufacturer in the sequels.

1958 Chevy Impala in American Graffiti

Before filming the first Star Wars movies, George Lucas created this 1973 coming-of-age car film surrounding the California hot rod scene. Needless to say, there were plenty of muscle cars to admire here!

Since filming, the actual car used in the film has passed hands a couple of times but was restored to its movie-worthy condition in 2016.

1970 Chevy Chevelle SS 454 in Jack Reacher

Over the years, Tom Cruise has had access to some amazing vehicles, but this Chevy Chevelle is possibly one of the best!

With an intense five-minute chase sequence in the movie, this car is given time to shine. This particular model was in red with the sleek SS black stripes on the hood. The same model can also be seen in the 1993 film Dazed and Confused.

High-speed action and cool-looking cars just go so well together!

1971 Plymouth GTX in The Fate of the Furious

It’s safe the say that with thirteen instalments in the Fast and Furious franchise, there have been countless cool cars throughout the series.

To narrow it down to just one, we’ve picked the Plymouth GTX which can be seen in the 2017 film The Fate of the Furious. On-screen, the car supposedly has a 7.2 litre V8 that can produce more than 2000 horsepower. In reality, the sleek black vehicle is a Roadrunner converted for filming.

1981 DeLorean DMC-12 in Back to the Future

This is a legendary car that has captured the hearts and imaginations of movie-watchers for decades.

The DeLorean’s uniquely futuristic design makes it the perfect candidate for a time-travelling vehicle! The instantly recognisable car is central to all of the Back to the Future films and has become a character in its own right.

In the real world, the DeLorean wasn’t such a favourite as sales fell short upon initial release. However, thanks to its celebrity status the DeLorean now enjoys a cult following.
